What are you having a problem with in this contradiction? Here are some translations:
OF Three Days Journey
The city was so big that it took three days just to walk through it.
The city was so big that it took three days just to walk through it.
Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey [in extent)
three days' journey in breadth, 3 days just to walk through it ____________________________________________________
A 3 day journey in EXTENT, a 3 day journey in BREADTH, a 3 day journey just to walk THROUGH it. Where are you having a problem understanding this? Do you think God wants us to believe that the City had 3 days EXTENT or BREADTH because He knows we will assume (without it needing to be mentioned) that if you stay in a hotel or stop to preach...this will change the breadth of the City? Do we simply have to find the right translations then, and follow with a million or so assumptions and conjectures before we can rescue the confused thinking of the PERFECT LORD?? Is the person reading the NEW REVISED STANDARD VERSION somehow getting cheated out of the inerrant word of the Lord?
Yours is the straw man argument. It is you trying to avoid the clearness of the text and pretend we are only trying to consider if the statement can be made true by assuming Jonah wanders around a great deal. With this the argument of city size can never be debated can it. The text could have said it was 10,000,000 miles in extent (or breadth) and you would say: Yes, yes, yes!!! If you wander around long enough! Or let's find a translation that allows us to obfuscate the clarity with nonsensical propositions? PITIFUL!
