Philips Semiconductors Plant Begins Operating in Dongguan
September 6, 2000 (GUANGZHOU, China) -- The first semiconductor factory funded by Philips in China began operation in the city of Dongguan, in southern China's Guangdong province.



Arther Van Der Poel, president of Philips Semiconductor, said that China is a key long-term investment area for Philips.

Philips invested US$24 million in the initial stage of the enterprise, which covers an area of 15,000 sq. meters. Devices made by the company will be used in computers, mobile phones, TVs and washing machines.

Also, Philips plans to invest RMB1 billion (US$120 million) to expand the enterprise's production over the next two years.

The Dutch company has 32 wholly owned and joint-venture enterprises in China, with a total investment exceeding US$1 billion.

Who are the manufacturers of NAND type chips?

Toshiba, Sandisk, Samsung, and Hitachi are the major players. There may be a few more.
