Samsung estimates this year's semiconductor sales at $13 billion. The firm also said in a press conference at Samsung headquarters that it will start setting up its 11th production line at a Hwasong factory in Kyonggi Province as soon as the 10th line starts operating this month to boost production of high-density memory like DRAM, Rambus DRAM and flash memory. The 11th line will be operated from the latter half of next year and a 300-millimeter wafer production line will be set up in that facility. It will start building a production line exclusively for LSI (large-scale integration) systems, which will produce 30,000 8-inch wafers per month, from next month to produce 0.130.18 micron ASICs (application specific integration circuit), CPUs (central processing unit) and SOCs (system on chip) from 2002. System LSI sales, which are estimated at $1.7 billion this year, will be increased by 24 percent every year to $3 billion in 2002 and $5 billion in 2005, the company said. With these goals, the company plans to invest 5.7 trillion won (US$5.2 billion) into its semiconductor business this year and a similar amount next year. The company's semiconductor business CEO Lee Yun-woo, who attended the news conference with other executives, said that fast developments in international markets and digital media products will lead to a shortage of DRAMs through the year 2002.
