speaking of "paradigm shift", i believe Kumar has completely missed the broadband shift. Dell's entry into the GSM/GPRS arena (especially for Europe) creates Dell's first major entry onto the wireless, broadband centered laptop scene.

several companies, including an Orange (UK networks) contracted company, Ubinetics, has developed smart cards for insertion into upgraded Euro slots which turns laptops into wireless handsets.

upgrades to GPRS, with data rates up to 144kbps, are already being tested by Dell and other Euro OEMs. over 1/2 of Euro GSM networks will be GPRS upgraded by the end of the year (capable of handling the larger data rate punctuations)

Kumar's P3 "junk", or "outdated technology" as he prefers to call it, is fine for most initial wired broadband applications. P4 board upgrades to handle GPRS are necessary. since over 30% of Dell's business is lease related, and since many of those leased systems appear to be specifically ballooned for this fall and next year (about three/four years from inception - or when business clients began initially aggressively pursuing Dell's leasing program), Dell believes they have "guaranteed" sales in the upgrade hopper - many of those specifically designed for further broadband applications.
