Eric,

<< Re: W-CDMA chipsets >>

Thank you for posting the link to the "eeTimes" article on 3G IC vendors.

One sentence in particular caught my eye.

"So critical is the move to 3G services that DoCoMo has set out to monitor the entire technology chain, even down to the device level"

One of my golf mates, who heads microwave design for a US firm, just returned from spending the better part of a week (not the first time) at the DoCoMo R&D Center in Yokosuka Research Park.

He spent the better part of 30 minutes in the "19th hole" this last Sunday, describing this statement in some expanded detail.

Yozan appears to be FUD.

I sent this quote to a few contacts in the industry:

"Yozan will provide the matched-filter and rake portions of the chip set and Philips the W-CDMA baseband ICs based on the ARM7 and Oak DSP cores."

and this was their response:

"Yozan doesn't have lots of credibility among Japan domestic handset providers. Also, our experience tells us that doing high speed data will require a faster microprocessor or a significant amount of on chip memory (or cache)."

Cheers,
Kent
