SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY UPDATE
September 6, 2000 SEMICONDUCTORS
Richard L. Whittington
I’m A Broken Record
All checks are coming up positive.
-Only issue, as yet unconfirmed, is a Qual Hold on the highest clock rate P3s to several enterprise
PC programs - a natural outgrowth of two weeks ago’s 1.13Ghz debacle. This shouldn’t represent
more than 5% of Intel’s processor units and should be resolved fairly shortly, requiring additional
testing before the parts are accepted - if true.
- DRAM contract pricing is characterized as "stable to firming" at the largest US and Asian DRAM
makers, with tier one OEMs "pulling hard" and suppliers unable to meet new upsides.
- Asian white box makers continue to have difficulty securing adequate x86 supplies, hence have
yet to enter "year end" orders.
- Chip brokers had record sales in August, strength across the board, DRAM excluded (no activity).
- All other chip classes, also including discretes as well as capacitors, seeing strong demand-pull
from a broad assortment of electronic OEMs.
- As with the "cell phone scare" this summer, my industry contacts and information point me in
precisely the opposite direction from the past two days’ stock movement.
