You are right- the Bible is not clear. The people who wrote the Bible probably weren't clear either. That's a problem in a document you are supposed to believe whole hog. And if you get to pick and choose you can make it mean anything. And folks do make it mean anything- as you can see by the infighting between Christian sects.

If God had any hand in the Bible than he has a twisted sense of humor. I personally think one can make a much better argument that the Bible is the Devil's work (if there is/was a devil)

Revised Standard Version:

So Jonah arose and went to Nin'eveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nin'eveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth

Contemporary English Version:

The city was so big that it took three days just to walk through it.

For almost all people the bible is a translated version of the copies of the copies of the copies. Nevertheless, the biblical scholars with a biblical bias have presumably done their level best to translate the meaning into English. In all the translations I gave to you, the meanings (and the notes) are very consistent and clear. You have no argument. But take solace in this: Like many unflattering sections of the bible--these words will be softened, altered, and made more vague during the next major translation. You can bet everything you own on that!
