The Sunnyvale, California-based company's European operations represented 11% of last year's $247m revenue, rising to 16% in the first half of this year, when overall revenue for SanDisk surpassed all of 1999, at $253m. This was achieved with a presence in the UK, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia, Italy and Spain, explained Stuart Fray, retail sakes manager for SanDisk in northern Europe. SanDisk's revenue is still primarily derived (roughly 70%) from OEM business, with customers such as Casio, Epson, HP, Kodak, Panasonic and Samsung. It is the market leader in flash cards, with a 28% share of the market in revenue terms, according to IDC data, ahead of Toshiba Corp, in second place with 19%, and Samsung Corp with 10%. With 20,000 outlets worldwide selling its products, however, the retail side of the business is growing, and can be expected to exceed the 30% mark going forward. To speed that growth, the company last month formed an alliance with Bookham, UK-based photographic booth operator Photo-Me International Plc, to install self-vending digital photo labs, i.e. print kiosks, in the US and other countries where digital cameras are sold in significant quantities. The joint venture, to be called Digital Portal Inc (DPI), will produce kiosks that accept all major formats of flash cards, including SanDisk's CompactFlask, MultiMediaCard and Secure Digital products and Toshiba's SmartMedia cards, as well as the memory Stick from Sony Corp, floppy disks and CD ROMs. Fray said the kiosks will be branded with the SanDisk name in North America and Photo-Me in Europe.
