I used Alta Vista advanced search and found this one. There is a discussion of non-random firings under Discussion at the end. It is a fine overview of our problem of "conciousness" in general as it pertains to the current neural network model.

I found the reference to Multiple Personality Disorder particularly interesting. There seems to be a different frequency coherence state associated with each personality. Is this like the interference of images on your TV when you have two weak, but competing stations trying to assert themselves?

In Buddhism, I never had a problem with "Where do all the new personalities come from?" issue. The argument goes like this: As the population increases, where do the new seats of consciousness get their identities? I view this problem as sitting next to an ocean of lemonade and asking how can you keep filling your pitcher yet the ocean doesn't go empty. When I solve engineering problems, I frequently feel like the solutions I come up with aren't completely mine. I don't mean I steal other people's work, but that the whole process of solving the problem seems to function differently than those processes (like emotional state) which appear to be "mine alone" . But even then, why do sometimes I just feel crabby and mean? Is is just low blood sugar or is another consciousness trying to intrude?
