I'm a DADDY! 5 baby coons, not 3! HG48, Great news! We didn't lose a baby after all. It was a different family!

Recall over a week ago the 3 babies showed up for the first time, then after that we saw only 2 and thought something had happened to one of the babies.

I told my wife the other night that the momma looked and acted a bit different with the 2 babies. The momma we knew was so tame she would come up to the door to get her cookies. The one with the two babies was not as tame.

Then tonight we were stunned and thrilled to look out there and see that all 3 babies were there eating and playing in the water. All accounted for. We hadn't lost a baby after all. But, we recognized immediately that it was the regular momma and not the one that had been coming with the 2 little ones this past week.

I was telling my wife that maybe the 2 babies had been coming with another adult to eat and that the regular momma was staying back with the 3rd little one because it was sick or was just too early to bring it out.

After awhile, all of a sudden we see two babies poke their heads up over the steps and then the other momma. Then it hit us, 5 babies, two separate families!

I had said that the 3 babies were so small a week ago. We figure that maybe momma 1 recognized she had brought them out too early and then kept them back for another week until now. In the meantime, momma 2 showed up with her two, which were a bit bigger, and those are the ones we've seen all week.

So, there are two mommas, one with 3 babies, one with 2 babies.

Great news. We didn't lose a baby. All accounted for!

I knew you would be excited to a happy ending to this story!

Wow, lots of feeding. BTW, when the babies from momma 1 were there, so was baby possum 1. Eating together. Baby possum 2 had already come once tonight. What a hoot.
