So this component of static field sounds like a junction alignment problem wrt certain crystal directions. It would be interesting to grow vanilla junctions on their M-plane GaN and see how they perform. Methinks there are a number of inefficiencies that dwarf the static fields problems. Of course the static fields problems couldn't be cured with process improvements....
