"The global PC market is still growing along with the booming Internet industry, so there's still large potential for our business," Lin told a briefing for institutional investors. The production of global PC makers totaled US$320 billion last year, and the amount is expected to increase at an average rate of 11% annually, Lin said. Acer has said it expects to ship 2.5 million notebook PCs this year, compared with last year's 1 million units along with around 8 million desktop PCs, from 7 million units recorded in 1999. The rising shipments will likely help boost Acer's sales to NT$150 billion (US$1=NT$31.082) this year. Acer also expects its 2000 net profit to reach NT$12 billion this year, higher than last year's NT$7.3 billion. Acer is Taiwan's largest PC maker and among the world's top 10 largest PC makers. However, Lin didn't provide the forecast of the company's PC shipments for next year. In addition, Lin added that Acer will introduce the lightweight and hand-held personal digital assistants, or PDAs, later this month or early next month. Looking for ways of offsetting pressure from lower profit margins, Acer has ventured into the Internet appliance industry to make higher value-added products, such as PDAs and set-top boxes that will access the Internet on television screens. Acer has said that it expects to ship around 2 million IA products this year. Acer shares closed NT$1.4 lower at NT$37 Thursday.
