Interesting note, but leading edge network processors available in the next two years will operate at seven layers at wirespeed. Moreover, Lucent, Xros (Nortel), Calient, Corning, and several startups all have cross-connects in or near Beta test far ahead of the Corvis specs you describe (Corvis's switch also far surpasses these specs). Of course, none of these inventions will perform all the managerial and processing functions of electronic devices, but they will be bitrate and protocol independent, offer capacities orders of magnitude ahead of electronics, and use technologies advancing four times as fast, so the gap will grow.
