I agree, we could update much of our archaic spelling. One big problem however, is, what are we going to do with the homonyms which includes contractions such as - they're, their and there. I find myself painfully deciphering many phrases in some of the posts by "uncareful" people. (g)

Ray,
There is no Academy of English, only Webster's and the like; perhaps that's a good thing. However, despite the non phonetic spelling, English is remarkably flexible, adaptable and generally eclectic. It accepts nonsense words like "normalcy", foreign words like "charisma" and "kindergarten" and jargon like "internet" and a zillion(G) acronyms without missing a stroke. There is a widely used slang which includes your "thru"(a bureaucratic invention) and silly stuff like "irregardless". However, there is a limit. I honestly have trouble understanding some posters on some threads and not just those who are professional double talkers or foreigners. It is frustrating to learn that most are adult, native born Americans. Some of this is just ignorance, laziness or some impairment like dislexia(sp), etc. However, I believe some of these people could do a lot better but are deeply contemptuous of others and their rules. These folks aren't making any friends, IMO.

Ray: the written word has been relatively immutable..

Ohhhhh....I dunno about that. I guess it depends on your time
frame. Ever looked at the written "Queens English" of 6 centuries ago? Yeeeesh! Me thinks it evolves, too.

'Course....since we're all on the subject...I've often wonder what everything in 600 years will be like, given the current dominance of English, with Spanish, French, German and some Asian dialects all rubbing up against each other a la global village style. You think there'll be some universal hybrid language like......ohhhh.....Spangchinglish? And when you add to this the "spice" of our rapidly evolving "techno-speak..." shorthand.....well, all I can say is WHOOOOOSH!!

John~

European Union

Here it is, the latest news from our International Development
correspondent.

The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement
has been reached. Agreement to adopt English as the preferred
language for European communications, rather than German which was
the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a
five year phased plan for what will be known as the EuroEnglish (Euro
for short).

In the first year "s" will be used instead of the soft "c".
Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the
hard "c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up
konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the
troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make words like
"fotograf" 20 persent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptense of the new spelling kan be
expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are
possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters,
which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil
agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disrasful,
and they would go.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing
"th" by "z" and "w" by "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan
be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud ofkors
be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be
no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand
ech ozer.

Ze drem vil finali kum tru!

Harold
