DETROIT, Sept. 7 – Texas Gov. George W. Bush backed down today from his refusal to participate in more than one formal presidential debate and said he now is willing to negotiate the question with Vice President Gore.

"I want there to be debates," Bush said. "There will be debates – I'm confident there will be debates. As to what they look like and where they are, it'll be worked out in due course."
