TOKYO--The number of mobile phone users in Japan grew 18.7 percent in August from a year earlier, underscoring the continued vibrancy of the wireless market in the island nation.

There were 60.87 million mobile phone users in the world's No. 2 telecommunications market as of the end of August, the Telecommunications Carriers Association said today.

The overwhelming popularity of Internet-enabled mobile phones, which allow users to browse the Net on business card sized screens, is adding fuel to the overall growth in cell phone sales.

NTT DoCoMo, the industry's top wireless carrier, had 33.66 million cell phone subscribers in its networks.

Of that total, 11.1 million were logging onto the Web via DoCoMo's i-mode service, which has established itself as Japan's leading Internet service provider in the 18 months since its launch.
