According to the sector's estimate, the supply will fall short of demand by 40 percent in 2001 and 20 percent in 2002. Rapid growth in the market for handset products, cell phones, PDAs and other portable wireless products has generated a huge demand for touch panels. The sector also estimates that the soaring popularity of PDA, Webpad and Internet phones products will increase the global demand for touch panels to around 50 million units next year. Based on the known current production capacity of touch panel manufacturers in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the United States, this year's total global production of touch panels has been calculated at around 30 million units, 40 percent less than total demand. By 2002, the touch panel supply is expected to grow by 30 percent, but will still fail to close the gap between supply and demand. The supply capacity will remain limited for some time, as upstream touch panel materials are mostly supplied from Japan, and plant expansion in Japan will take approximately a year to complete. Until a year ago, touch panel production was dominated by Japanese and U.S. manufacturers. Taiwan is now beginning to move into this market, with touch panel investment in the island rapidly growing, attracted by its growing cell phone and IA market. Eying potential in this sector, Audix Corp. and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. have decided either to cooperate with other companies or diversify their present investments to gear up to exploit the burgeoning market for touch panel manufacturers.
