rvagabond,

Welcome to the Porch.

Your SI handle caught my eye.

Many moons ago, when I was in 5th grade, my teacher used to read to us when we returned from lunch break.
He was in his 60's and had returned from open heart surgery back when this procedure was just new.
He missed the 1st half of the school year and an evil substitute teacher had been filling in.
When we returned from Christmas vacation this frail, gentle, warm, and kind teacher stood before us.

All of us students were usually all hyped up after lunch time. It was hard to shut the switch off and return to listening to the next lesson.
Most teachers spent a good part of the afternoon yelling at the students and forcing them to quiet down.
Instead this teacher had a book that he read year after year after year. The worn cloth bound cover and dog eared yellowish pages gave us an idea how long he had been teaching.
The magical book was called "Rasmus And The Vagabond".
With the soft spoken manner he read each chapter, he could some how melt away the chocolate milk, ice cream sandwiches, and sweets that were still coursing through our juvenile veins.
He had the ability to transform a group of wildeyed kids into a classroom full of little angels.

It took him probably two months to read this book as he read for approx. 15 minutes each day.
I remember not wanting the book to end.
We enjoyed it so much.

I can't remember what the story was about.
I just remember how he read it.

Thanks for choosing a SI name that jogged this happy memory from me.

I'm going to see if I can find a copy of the book.
I'd like to read it again.
Perhaps I'll be able to hear his voice.

If anything, my two youngsters will probably enjoy it.
Hopefully I can read it in a similar way as my 5th grade teacher.
