Cirruslvr, NTAP gets its hard drives off the shelf. Last I heard, GTW was their prime vendor. That may have changed, but GTW had the best fibre channel drives at the time.

BUT...

NTAP QA's a particular drive from a vendor with a particular firmware version. After QA, which usually results in NTAP's finding bugs in the vendor's firmware that must be fixed and re-QA'ed, NTAP only accepts that specific drive/firware combination from the vendor. Then when drives are received into inventory, each is tested by NTAP. Used to be that NTAP rejected >10% the drives, though they had passed the drive mfgr's QA.

Then the drives are burned in as a part of the NTAP pre-ship customer configuration QA. Any failures there are rejected as well.
