P, On August 1, 2000, Tuesday Morning reported second quarter earnings of $0.11 per share, almost double the $0.06 per share it earned in the year-ago quarter and a penny above the consensus estimate. The upside surprise was driven by better-than-expected sales, which increased 23% to $132.6 million compared to net sales of $107.7 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales increased 12.8% for the quarter driven primarily by higher level of customer traffic. Lower markdowns helped gross profit margins improved by nearly 70 basis points to 33.7%.

Tuesday says in its 10Q that growth has been spurred by the strong economy.

My Mom has a friend who is in the retail home furnishing business and his company buys millions of dollars of stuff from Tuesday, mostly linens. He says the stuff TUES sells is very high quality and dirt cheap. Tuesday is a specialty retailer at deep discount prices. They buy very high quality inventory at deep discount prices from e tailors and department stores (that obviously want it off their shelves) and then sell it at deeply discounted prices during certain specified time periods throughout the year. Here is an example:

Tuesday has a very loyal following. When their stores open, there is quite a long line to get in. Their merchandise sells fast.

An analyst once asked the old CEO if Tuesday was a buy out candidate. The CEO said he "doesn't see how that's possible since TUES is the only company that he knows of that operates the way it does."

The $15 spike in early August took place on heavy volume and represented a short term top.

TUES rallied very strongly last year from the end of September to the beginning of December. They have been in business since the mid 70's.

TUES is a pretty good stock to hide in when the techs get slammed. It's not unusual to see TUES either go up or remain unchanged while the techs are getting massacred.

Volume was strong yesterday. Wonder what's brewing.

PS Off Topic Stuff is fine, of course.

PSS You may be able to buy in a little cheaper here. 90 cents is the consensus EPS this year. $1.08 next year.
