PC Sales in Third Week of August Rise Significantly Thanks to Holidays
September 11, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer sales in the third week of August 2000 (Aug. 14-20) showed a large increase in both volume and value.

Sales increased by 18.7 percent on a unit basis and by 18.3 percent on a value basis compared to the previous week. This result was obtained from the POS data collected by GfK Japan Ltd., which handles surveys on 3,200 large electric home appliance retail stores in Japan.

It was since the fourth week of May that the week-on-week growth rate exceeded the 15 percent mark in terms of unit-based sales. PC sales were brisk in August, resulting from summer holidays many Japanese companies observed in the third week. Those on holiday are believed to have visited retail shops.

PC sales, compared with the same week last year (Aug. 16-22, 1999), increased by 82.8 percent in units and also increased by 56.5 percent in value. This is because last year the summer holiday week fell one week earlier than this year.

The average retail price for PCs fell to 188,165 yen, down 589 yen from 188,754 yen a week before. (105.07 yen = US$1)

Compaq Sees Sales in Asia Pacific Growing 30 Percent in 2001

Source: Bloomberg News
Singapore, Sept. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp., the world's biggest maker of personal computers, said it expects Asia Pacific sales to grow by 30 percent next year as the market rebounds, the Business Times reported, citing Michael Capellas, Compaq's chief executive, and Paul Chan, the company's Asia Pacific chief

Compaq's 1999 sales in the Asia Pacific region -- excluding Japan and Greater China, but including Australia and New Zealand -- were more than $2 billion. Second-quarter sales this year in the same region grew 12 percent on year and 17 percent on quarter.

''Most of our Asia Pacific regional teams have set stretch goals for themselves to double their business over the next two to three years,'' said Chan.

Asia accounted for about 15 percent of Compaq's $38.5 billion revenue last year. Compaq expects 12 percent to 15 percent revenue growth this year

No panic yet, but MU did go back to a hold signal from the previous buy. The good thing is, on my system, a hold means a hold, not a sell like with the big Wall Street houses. Yogi
