good summary. i agree that the HAND-PALM relationship is a multi-layered dynamic. i think that you have outlined it quite well.

earlier, W-L-D said, "I'm quite sure if there is a food chain issue PALM can help HAND with, they'd do it"...

and to that i would append, yes, of course

but only after they (PALM) have eaten well themselves

Possibly OT, but down the road a ways wouldn't HAND make an attractive acquisition to a DELL or similar such company?
