NaviSite introduces expanded managed storage service offerings

Alliances with Compaq and EMC to provide information-intensive e-businesses with comprehensive managed storage solutions

ANDOVER, Mass., Sept. 8, 2000 - NaviSite, Inc. (Nasdaq: NAVI), today announced a Storage Area Network (SAN) service that provides fully managed storage solutions for companies' business-critical, e-commerce information. Based on technology from storage leaders Compaq and EMC (see today's alliance announcements with each company), NaviSite's Managed Storage Solutions will provide customers with dedicated storage solutions backed by the company's experience in monitoring and managing complex computing systems. These managed storage solutions will be provided together with NaviSite's managed application hosting services, thereby providing customers with a complete, integrated solution. This combination is designed to ensure the availability and performance of customers' Web businesses.

Through a range of Managed Storage Solutions, available at the end of this month, NaviSite will procure, install and configure customers' storage solutions and provide 24x7 monitoring and management. The services are priced based on usage to minimize customers' up-front capital investment in storage hardware and software. In addition, NaviSite's Managed Storage Solutions eliminate the need for customers to dedicate information technology (IT) staff to labor-intensive storage management tasks. NaviSite deploys these storage solutions as dedicated, not shared, environments designed to eliminate single points of failure in order to ensure high performance and availability. Like other NaviSite-managed services, this storage service will be backed by industry-leading Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

According to Dataquest, the storage utility market will grow to more than $8 billion by 2003. Concurrently, there is a growing trend of companies outsourcing their Web site management. NaviSite will deliver a high level of managed services for both storage and Web site infrastructure needs, providing customers with a single point of contact for problem resolution management and reducing downtime. This integrated storage and managed hosting services model sets NaviSite apart from offerings that merely thread together services from multiple companies and often fail to clearly spell out who is responsible for guaranteeing response times and problem resolution. Most industry SLAs offer a fragmented approach to ensuring uptime by covering only pieces of the relevant systems necessary to keep a Web site operating smoothly. In contrast, NaviSite's comprehensive managed services offering enables the company to provide end-to-end SLAs that guarantee the uptime of customers' Web- based applications.

Managed storage solutions

Storage is no longer a simple IT practice that includes putting a hard disk in a server. Today, Web site applications require storage and protection of tremendous amounts of data; even traditional Web sites can require terabytes of storage capacity. Storage management requires trained engineers to support a 24x7, business- critical Internet commerce operation. NaviSite's engineering staff help customers determine the best storage configuration, then proactively monitor and manage the solution. Providing customers with managed storage offerings that include support for high performance, redundant storage configurations, and comprehensive mirroring and replication services, allows companies to do business without having to take critical data off line.

In addition to leveraging Compaq's and EMC's technology today, NaviSite will collaborate with both companies on research and development opportunities in the future.
With access to the latest storage technology developments, NaviSite expects to stay ahead of the curve and be able to provide customers with advanced storage technology as soon as it is available.

NaviSite's Managed Storage Solutions will include the following range of services, some available now and others to be made available subsequent to the initial rollout:

High availability managed storage - including provisioning of hardware and software, installation, configuration and ongoing 24x7 proactive monitoring and management;

Business continuance solutions - enables non-disruptive backup, offline reporting and auditing, and fast data recovery;

Storage on demand - enables customers to increase their storage capabilities within minutes or hours;

Cross-data center mirroring and replication - for disaster recovery situations;

Flash storage - for extra short-term storage capacity at peak demand times;

Detailed storage reporting - including Web-based reporting and statistics; and

Service level agreements - designed to guarantee specific levels of performance for specific installations.

"Storage is an integral part of a company's Web presence, and a managed storage service fits naturally with an overall managed hosting offering," said Joel Rosen, president and CEO of NaviSite. "Our alliances with premier storage providers like Compaq and EMC will provide our customers with access to the most cutting-edge storage technology available, and assist NaviSite's team of experts in staying well- versed in all technology enhancements and upgrades."

The structure of Navisite's SLA (Service Level Agreement) provides an idea of how EMC and Compaq are going to split the business.

.....NaviSite's Application Infrastructure Availability SLAs offer staggered levels of application availability, based on contracted levels of redundancy. For example, the high-end agreement for large business and ASP clients includes dedicated backup on fully redundant systems, enabling up to 99.999% availability. A midrange package will support shared backup. Its uptime guarantee of 99% is less aggressive, ensuring no more than 7.6 hours of downtime per month.........
