Tench,
RE:"Maybe because it's easy and it's possible? Heck, Intel even demonstrated a "gee whiz" Willamette going at 2.0 GHz. You'd think most of them are yielding at pretty high speeds, no?"
I suspect Willy has a lot of headroom...yes.
Are you dropping some hints?
Still, Intel isn't into giving anything away...and profits would be maximized by starting WIlly at 1.2 Ghz and just raising the bar every month or too...

RE:"This has little to do with the IPC question. Even with high GHz, a low IPC will be a tough sell."

Well, OK...but at least they have Mhz and we know that sells...
I'm not sure if it was possible to have high Mhz and high IPC using todays old technology. Or they should have just gone for higher Mhz and not hampered it with the ALU thing.
Such a controversial chip the P4 is! Even before it's out...
Probably because Intel is expected to make a bang up chip...
Unless Willy is anything less than a stellar performer that it will be a major letdown.
Athlon wasn't near the enigma as no one expected AMD to do anything right.
