The race for the presidency heads into the final stretch with Al Gore and George W. Bush locked in the tightest contest since 1980.

In early September 1980, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan were tied at 39%. Reagan had a late surge and won by 9.7 points.

Maybe Bush should consider getting some hostages. :-)
