wstera,

I replied to Suzie on TMF and also sent her an E-Mail inviting her to join SI. Reply below(not my best effort; I was in a hurry):

Suzie,

I think the problem with W-CDMA's progress has a few facets, but will agree the CDMA2000 route is QCOM's preference, as they wrote the standard :

- There is no indication WCDMA handsets are anywhere near available. I'm not familiar with Infineon's progress, but a new CDMA ASIC vendor needs some field testing before their offerings can be deemed a success. Look to NOK, MOT, LSI, and others who failed in the field.

- Is W-CDMA not a standard in flux? Lots of parties with their hands in there I would say, many with NO practical experience with CDMA.

- It took a long time for 2G CDMA to go from having a network installed to operating a fully loaded network. Again, there is an experience gap here.

- W-CDMA is not a very clean IPR situation on top of the standard rate due to QCOM.

I look forward to your commments.

the royalty charged by QCOM is the same for CDMA and WCDMA. there is not third generation TDMA available in the near future even though it has been proposed by AT&T. this proposal is not very serious since TDMA is inferior technically. WCDMA is for GSM. Bear Stearn's analyst said the Present value of royalty will make the stock worth $200.
