Data released by Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC did not show Apple in the top five among computer makers for expected third quarter shipment. In addition, Apple did not rank among the top five in second quarter worldwide or U.S. PC shipments. As for third quarter projections, worldwide PC unit sales are forecast to reach 33.4 million in the quarter. U.S. growth is forecast to be 11 percent from a year ago, driven by a rebound in consumer PC sales and back-to-school marketing as well as an improvement in the commercial market, IDC said. The forecast is slightly better than IDC's earlier prediction of 17 percent growth for the third quarter, as strong demand for home PCs fueled shipments in Asia and the U.S. IDC expects PC shipments to the Asia Pacific to increase 36 percent with Japan jumping 35 percent. "The heated growth in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) is based on thriving markets for consumer desktops and portables. Japan's strong performance is pinned to consumer PC consumption and an ongoing recovery in the commercial market," the report stated. PC shipments to Western Europe are expected to climb about 14.5 percent. With regard to second quarter U.S. PC shipments, here were the top five vendors: Dell -- 2,293,284 units 20.07% share Compaq -- 1,693,002 units 14.82% share HP -- 1,220,625 units 10.68% share Gateway -- 963,511 units 8.43% share IBM -- 713,137 units 6.24% share Others -- 4,542,323 units 39.75% share dailynews.yahoo.com and this: DELL COMPUTER, INC. (DELL) STRONG BUY Increasingly Confident in Dell’s Quarter; Continue to Think Overall PC Demand is OK We believe Dell’s* Oct. quarter is on track with expectations following our visit to Austin yesterday. We’d buy on the recent weakness. More broadly, we still can’t find evidence of a sudden slowdown in end PC demand. We’re increasingly confident any negative signals emanating from component supply chain reflect PC vendors’ over-ordering in last quarter’s shortage environment. cnetinvestor.com
