Hunters Shoot Bear Featured on Discovery Channel

The Associated Press
E L Y, Minn., Sept. 7 — Two radio-collared bears made
famous by a northern Minnesota researcher have
been shot and killed by hunters.
One of the bears gained notoriety last winter when a
video camera was placed in its den — and thousands of
people watched it hibernate on the Discovery Channel’s Web
site.
The black bears were fitted with bright white collars
carrying radio transmitters, and shooting them is not illegal.
Now researcher Lynn Rogers is calling for a new rule
making collared bears off-limits.
Randy VanBoxel of Cannon City agrees — and he’s the
hunter who shot the bear, named Whiteheart. Now he says
he feels bad, and has sworn off hunting the animals.
He talked to Rogers on the telephone soon after shooting
Whiteheart on August 23rd.
But apparently Rogers didn’t warn VanBoxel about other
bears in the area he was studying — Randy’s brother
Michael shot Spirit, Whiteheart’s relative, a few days later
