Cha2,

Re: SUNW - Java - Smart Cards - Java Card Platform - Oberthur - Gemplus

You are a SUNW guy (like saukriver).

You might enjoy this link.

java.sun.com

In real life my game is smart cards as you know, and anyone who reads my profile might intuit same.

You (and others) have asked if I see any plays in the smart card industry.

I have generally replied, no, and typically substantiated that with some of the reasons I did not think so.

I would like to make you and others aware that Oberthur recently went public on Paris Bourse. Gemplus appears to be registered for IPO (3rd time) on Paris Bourse and the NAZ. Gemplus is rumored to produce $1.4 Billion revenue this year.

Both are "pure" smart card plays.

Texas Pacific has helped staff Gemplus senior management with VERY high level people from Intel and HP.

This is not a recommendation to buy either. It is a response to questions asked here, It is also, my first post here saying that it might be the time to research the industry, and these companies, if one is interested in the arena.

Thread participants who hold wireless stocks(QCOM, NOK, ERICY) or GMST, might have some appreciation of the role smart cards play in Wireless Mobile Telephony. and EPG, IPG.

Smart cards have been in moderate hypergrowth for some time. They got out of the chasm a long time ago, everywhere but in the US.

The two largest markets for smart cards in the world are Wireless Mobile Telephony and Pay TV. The emregining market is Financial Transaction Processing. Beyond that is Rapid Transit (contactless smart cards), combined with other applications on a contact chip (Dual Interface Smart Cards).

You asked. I answered (finally). Enough said.
