Re: AMD cut the price in half on 1 GHz. And, since the (Register) rumor is that they have another price cut coming

I agree, John, AMD is pricing their chips with the expectation that they will have about 3 million parts at 1+GHZ to sell in Q4.

Given Intel's near term prospects for high volume in that speed range, what do you think will happen to Intel ASPs in Q4?

Sheer inertia will limit the decline, but it won't stop it.

Regards,

Dan

John, Re: Umm, what's the price of the 1 GHz Athlons?

$612. Why do you ask? I thought you were familiar with the AMD pricing as an investor. Oh, that's roughly the price of the yet to be introduced 1.4 GHz P4. And the Athlon is much cheaper to produce. Additional AMD doesn't have to give $70 rebates to sell its processors at all.

I'm making the same point now as I was making last month, that AMD's "sweet spot" price point is a lot lower than Intel's

Let's see: AMDs sweet spot is at 950 MHz (in Dresden, of course, at roughly 1 GHz but let's be fair and assume the worst). The price for that part is $460. Intels sweet spot is at 850 MHz. And Intels price is $365 for that. That means AMD is selling its "sweet spot" CPUs for $100 more than Intel. Did I miss something?

Andreas

PS: All pricing is from the latest official AMD price list (August, 14th) and Intel price list (August, 27th).
