Cobaltblue,
That guy in the tank (San Diego CA, btw), repeatedly tried to run over people in cars...intentionally. He was rocking the tank back and forth on the median divider and was successfully working his way off. There was no question that he had deadly intentions. Whether or not it was necessary to kill him, I don't know, but from seeing the video multiple times, I would guess that the cops saved *many* lives, since whichever direction he went, he would have had hundreds of cars and their drivers to run over.

The guy stole the tank in San Diego and drove it drunkenly through the streets. It was simple luck that he didn't kill anyone. If he had continued to drive on and had crushed a few people to death then all the Monday morning quarterbacks would howling about how the cops failed to protect the public.

The cop had no way of knowing whether the dude was armed or not inside the tank. The policeman easily could have been shot as he opened the hatch. You have the luxury of knowing the dude was unarmed, but the cop didn't. At the time no one knew who he was, why he stole the tank, or what he was planning to do.

It's a shame the guy was killed. As it turned out I think he was just drunk. But how would you suggest stopping an unknown crazy crushing stuff with a stolen tank? Just hope that he crushes cars and property, and not people, until he runs out of gas?

<<Ice was talking on the Clown-free thread about some yo-yo who stole a tank from the National Guard somewhere, and was driving around crushing cars and what-not, and then got stuck on the freeway, and didn't have the door locked so the police came in and capped him. Guy had no weapons and hadn't actually threatened anyone. >>

We just had an incident where a retarded guy drove off without paying for $17 in gas. It's happened before and he always pays when they remind him. This time 3 cops chased him down, disabled his car with 40 shots, and because he was too scared to get out of the car one of the cops shot him 5 times. Murder charges have been filed.

I see that maybe he could have gotten off the divider and he had actually taken a run at people. I only saw the video once. If he could have gotten off the divider at any minute, that changes things in my mind and they may have been justified. And I wouldn't have had a problem if a cop somehow got on top of the tank while it was mowing everything down and shot the guy.

My point was once the guy was hung up, dropping a few cans of tear gas and flash bangs down the hatch would have done quite a job, maybe the cops on the scene didn't have those. Shooting crazy or drunk people dead as the first option is not such a good choice but cops seem to be doing that much more frequently.

Recently, a local loony woman was shot dead by the cops. I believe she was manic, or whatever they call it now, and was blasting music out her apartment window and yelling about Satan , etc. Someone called the cops, they show up, kick in the door, see a mess in the apartment and writing on the walls, kick in her bedroom door at which point she started walking towards them with a kitchen knife screaming about Satan or somesuch. Four cops, they shot her half a dozen times rather than take her down with mace or just grab her or even back out of the apartment and regroup. She was in her mid 50's and not particularly large or skilled. Protect and Serve, good grief.

And there was the poor asshole with the helium filled weather balloons.

Are you talking about that guy out in kalifornia that tied weather balloons to a lawn chair and floated into the airport traffic area? Was up for the Darwin Award? He had a sad end, went out to a box canyon and ate a gun.
