a little knowledge will get you in trouble real quick

Yes, I was thinking that also. I re-read James Grant's article from the 3/31/2000 Grant's Interest Rate Observer. The discussion of hedonic effects on productivity seems carefully researched. I can't imagine why Prof. Gordon and Prof. Medoff would destroy their careers by neglecting something quite elementary, as Mr. Epstein implies. Such suicide has happened (remember "cold fusion"?), but it's rare. Harvard professors tend to be pretty astute.

Barron's has been an anachronism for decades... they don't pay enough to get people in there that understand even a basic Technology premis for instance, so they drag on with all those 1950's stats in the back and talk about Chemical companies. It's really a joke IMO, it's not surprising AT ALL to me that the most important stock market information is no found in forums like SI. For instance, if you know who to listen to on the biotech threads you'll find absolutely the best information available... same is probably true in many tech areas, QCOM for example had a following here on SI of the most knowlegable people in the field. I'm sure there are many other forums, just using SI as an example... there are thousands of 'journals and magazines' on the web written by people who know more about all areas of technology than anyone who ever wrote for BARRON's.

Can't wait for the hedonic debate to unfold, but the guy seems to have no clue, and it's not surprising, given the source.
