The Signpost Up Ahead

In 1985 the dollar dropped from 240 to 140 yen and 3.3 to 1.8 Deutsche marks. The current account deficit as a percent of GDP is nearly 50% greater now than in 1985. I'm aware there are often mitigating circumstances cited, not least among them the well-worn "It's different this time."

Q1/1985 Q1/2000
Current Account -23.52b -102.30b
GDP 4109.70b 9752.70b
CA % of GDP 0.57% 1.04%
