Dear Ish: Better to scratch the TJ than the Grand. You are right, the V-8 was substantially changed. The new one is said to be more efficient and still more powerful than the biggest of the old and specifically engineered for the available power trains. As to mud, I HATE MUD!! Went to Land Between the Lakes in Western Kentucky this spring and will never go back. I had my beautiful Grand BURIED in mud and TO THIS DAY, despite MANY power washings, I STILL HAVE MUD on the bottom. Will have to go under with hot soapy water and hand wash it off.
This TJ will be my last off road vehicle, barring a wreck. They last forever and there is a huge aftermarket parts supply for them. I will just keep rebuilding it. Right now its my "Project". Over time intend to put in a Suspension Lift and larger tires (probably 32" rather than the 30" I now have). Also hope to have ARB air lockers installed at least on the front axle if not both.
As to new, had I lived closer to the trails, yes, I would have gotten a used one. But, I have to drive 1,000's of miles just to GET to the trails from here in S. Fla. JDN
