This looks like a fast growing sector of the market to me.

Gigabit Ethernet is a high-speed, unifying technology for networking applications in LANs, MANs, and WANs. Further progress is expected to be made as companies work towards a 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard designed to provide simple, high bandwidth at a relatively low cost. In LAN applications 10 Gigabit Ethernet is expected to enable organizations to scale their packet-based networks from 10 Mbps to 10,000 Mbps, thereby leveraging company investments in Ethernet. In MAN and WAN applications, 10 Gigabit Ethernet is expected to enable service providers and others to create extremely high speed links at very low cost. Currently the market for Gigabit Ethernet is already growing rapidly. High-tech market research firm Cahners In-Stat Group expects the overall gigabit Ethernet switch market to reach almost 4 million units in ports shipped in 2000 with $4 billion in end-use revenue resulting in an all time high growth with over 200 percent greater than the total number ports shipped in 1999. According to the firm Cisco Systems held its No. 1 market share ranking in both ports shipped and sales in the Gigabit Ethernet switch market followed by Extreme Networks, Enterasys (formerly Cabletron) and Nortel Networks. Numerous other companies are making inroads to this fast growing market. You will find companies supplying actual Gigabit Ethernet Switches and component and chip suppliers here on the Gigabit Ethernet List.
