Maurice... The first problem with you theory of It might be cheaper and more profitable for the airline to just let people use their phone and get the extra business.. is that they airlines would actually have to pay a large amount of legal fees, to prove to the FAA that the phones are harmless to use in flight.. Kind of like when Boeing trumped McDonald Douglas and the MD-11... Douglas thought they had the Transpacific market in the palm of their hand with the MD-11. The MD-11 had 3 engines which WAS(the minimum) required for Transpacific flights.. So it seemed that the Transpacific market would be between the 747 and the MD-11.. However, Boeing and Delta spend a fortune proving that the 767 should qualify for ETOPS (Extended Twin Operation beyond Sixty Minutes).certification across the Pacific.. It took millions of dollars to prove to the FAA that the ETOPS restrictions across the Pacific should be lifted for Boeing 767/757.. That's why you now see Twin Engine planes on Transpacific Flights. My point being that the airlines would actually have to spend money to prove to the FAA that it is OK to let customers make Sat phone calls that are void of Airline surcharges on board.

Seems like more of that "Progress before Profits" idealism that you seem to support.. (Maybe Qualcomm should use this same business methodology as it pertains to Intellectual Property??)

BTW.. Good cue on the not holding your breath.. I once told this to my daughter when she was 8 years old.. "Sweetheart, Daddy's going to give you some advice that I want you to remember throughout your life". She replied.. OK, what is it Dad.. I said "Always Remember to Breathe". She still remembers it!
