Is the dog going to be used for hunting? Pointers are usually better all around field and water dogs while labs shine in water. Labs also seem to be able to handle cold water better with out getting chilled due to the thicker coat. I've had both and would say that pointers, at least german shorthairs, are smarter. Either would be a good pick for the kids.

I Like Big Dogs We have two Bull Mastiffs. I'd go for the Labs (Chocolate). Your last post to Heinz seemed a prelude to bear baiting. No problem being pragmatic though. A man was involved in a traffic accident and hurt quite badly. Since he appeared to be dying a priest arrived to give him the last rights. The priest asked the man "do you deny the devil and all his works?" To which the man responded "Father, I don't know if this is the time to make any enemies." Be careful out there.
