greg - Re: "Up 'till now, I had viewed Transmeta as noise in the system. I must admit that this design win is an important one. Any thoughts?"

Yes.

Any TransMeta design win is a LOSS for AMD - since all these supposed TransMeta users still use Intel as their primary supplier.

As Intel continues to lower the power consumption of the Pentium III (next year will see a shrink to 0.13 micron) and improve speeds, and users of the TransMeta CPU eventually realize the performance trade offs they encounter, Intel will again be seen as THE premier supplier for portable PCs.

Remember - VIA/Cyrix have introduced a bunch of press releases on their new Joshua, Samuel, Pontius Pilate CPUs that will trounce Intel - and the PRESS has immediately run with the stories and announced Intel's impending demise.

When these Cyrix/VIA CPUs were actually tested, they were proven to be technical flops.

So...the news media has a vested interest in announcing that a new Intel-Killer is marching through the forest.

Eventually, the Intel-Killer has to shoot something other than blanks to do any damage.
