saukriver,

Re: Palm v. Pocket PC - Handheld Game

Forgot to mention that one of the real clinchers for me on Palm v. CE V. Psion for me (and many users), was battery life. With the rechargeable Lithium Ion in the Vx or IIIc, not only is their no need to buy batteries, but on a week out trip, no need to haul a charger, or the synchronization cradle, and the GoType keyboard requires no batteries either.

After I started using the Palm, I was amazed at both the efficiency of the OS, and the plethora of 3rd party apps or applets available. In my case (using ACT! as a contact manager) there was no need for 3rd party software to synch. Same of course with Outlook or Outlook Express for e-mail.

I think it is going to be very hard to shrink Palms market share.

Eric,

Thanks for your insights on PocketPC v. Palm. The takeaway for the thread is that Palm is not really cheaper by the time you buy sync cradles, etc. and that its real advantage is in 3d party software. I.e., Palm has a stronger value chain.

I have been experimenting at work with a Windows CE device and am ready to junk it for a number of reasons. I can confirm that the software for Windows CE based devices is weak to useless. There are three different types of 3rd party software for Window CE devices, depending on the particular chip in the device. Makes it a royal headache to find and install software from the more limited software available for Windows CE devices.

I have some followup questions that I will pursue by PM as the don't related to the value chain of Palm. I also would be grateful for a PM from anyone with thoughts on Visor (the Palm OS device from Handspring).

Thanks again.

Differential seems to be about $125 to $150, apples to apples, although no question Pocket PC's need more RAM. "

Eric,

I would add that they also need to make WinCE as bombproof as the PalmOS. We do some development work for the HP Jornada line and from personal experience, I can say that I get a lot more "freezes" from the WinCE device than my Palm.

Also, why would you name something "wince" which is almost as bad as a software product by Trados named STagger (stagger right after you wince when your handheld crashes ;^)
