Thanks to Ted from the AMD thread for the following:

Friday delivered a positive edition of "The Boswell Report," a monthly survey of about 200 U.S. electronics stores published by market researcher Allison Boswell Consulting. According to the Boswell data, PC retail-unit sales in August jumped a surprising 59.6% from July, with average selling prices declining a negligible 0.1% sequentially. Intel-based PCs did even better than the overall average, jumping 67.2% sequentially and 136.1% from a year earlier.

"Timing was perfect, with pent-up consumer demand combined with back-to-school causing a tidal wave of sales this month," the report concluded. And August's numbers show "strong indicators that sales will continue to be strong through [the fourth quarter]."

Any ideas/guesses about Intels overall % share in retail now ?

Elmer - RE: "As I needed to look for a satellite dish anyway, I went to the Tempe Fry's and while there checked out the computer section. The GHz CuMines are in abundance here as well!"

There seems to be a correlation between areas where Intel is located and where 1GHz PIIIs are available. I wonder if that means anything. Has anyone checked out Oregan yet? ;)

Re:I went to the Tempe Fry's and while there checked out the computer section.

933MHZ remains the fastest Intel I saw on sale when I checked CompUSA today. There was one model from Compaq or HP (I don't remember which). Meanwhile 1000MHZ Athlons from Compaq and HP have been in stock for months, and one of the Compaq 1GHZ models is on closeout as it's about to replaced by a faster model (according to the clerk).

Athlons are being closed out that run at speeds faster than anything Intel has been able to supply.

AMD continues to demonstrate that it can easily stay one to two notches above Intel. They sit at a given speed grade for as many months as it takes Intel to catch up, then they raise the bar.

Elmer - Re: "Another remarkable thing is that out of the 19 notebook computers on display, 18 were Intel based. 1 AMD"

Nearly IDENTICAL stats for the Sunnyvale Fry's.

And as I noted, it appears that 75% of the buyer interest is in notebook PCs.

I'm sure the AMDroids will blow off this rather significant point !
