It is indeed remarkable to watch such young people demonstrate such poise.

Re: life decision - I have read, but don't know whether it's true, that for certain true stars in any field, the trajectory is clear early in life. Take, for instance, Bill Clinton, who is a supreme example of someone who was poised at an early age to be President, and got there surely and swiftly. Others sort of start and stop, but they get somewhere just the same, probably where they are going, if they keep going long enough. If you aren't one of the former, you can still be one of the latter. Jimmy Carter was an engineer and a peanut farmer before he became governor and then president, Ronald Reagan was a radio announcer, then an actor, then governor and then president.

You know what III regret most in life? Not getting off my ass more. Both in terms of exercise, and in terms of adventure. I just rode my bike for the first time in years, not the fancy-schmancy Mongoose I got when I had RA to inspire me to get better, but the old Specialized HardRock. The Mongoose has a new sort of air valve and my old pump won't fit it. I was huffing and puffing and am now really sweating.

Friday I had to drive to Leesburg to file something, and the drive there and back really irritated me and made me feel tired, and all of a sudden I remembered that I used to ride my bike from Dulles Airport to Leesburg and back on the W&OD trail a couple of times a week, no prob. Can't believe I let myself get this out of shape, but that's something I intend to fix. But it's easier to get in shape than stay in shape. No that's probably wrong, it's easier to stay in shape than get in shape.

<<but he "did the right, the expected, thing">>

Back in my college days I was dating Karen. I fell in love with her friend Tammy. I married Karen because it was "expected". It didn't last.

Now 30 years later I see Tammy in the grocery store about once a year and every time death would be welcome as bad as I feel. I did the expected thing.
