Ten,

re: CD burners are being sold for real cheap these days. You could easily find one for under $200. Just burn several CDs with mixes of your favorite songs, and you'll be able to listen to them just about anywhere.

I've thought of that, and may do it. But it still doesn't give you the function of the PC. It's like have a private jukebox with only your favorite songs, that you can select in any order depending on your mood. If you feel like your favorite Beethoven and Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday and Leon Redbone and Frank Sinatra, in that order, that's what you play, with a few clicks. It's the versatility that is the compelling feature.

Ideally, I'm hoping that flash memory becomes so abundant and so high-capacity (and low cost) that MP3 players (like Diamond Rio or Creative Nomad) become as ubiquitous as cassette decks used to be.

Yes, flash cards are really expensive at this point. You can get over two hours of music on a compact flash card, but the card will cost over $200. That industry is really capacity constrained, and will be for the next year at least, so I don't expect the prices to come down (disclosure: I own SanDisk which makes CF cards).

I think when Bluetooth comes into wide spread use, that may be the solution to a lot of problems.
