"Nasdaq's fall was due to earnings worries so that won't have
a great impact in Hong Kong but it will weaken market sentiment,"
Chan said.
Telecom stocks could lead Monday's slide, notably PCCW where
investors remain concerned about a possible overhang of shares if
Cable & Wireless Plc <CW.L> shareholders sell PCCW shares
following PCCW's takeover of Cable & Wireless HKT last month, and
last week's news that two partners were pulling out of ventures
with Richard Li's company.
PCCW plunged 8.3 percent last week to HK$13.20.
Alex Wong, research manager at OSK Securities, sees it
breaking below HK$13 on Monday to HK$12.50.
He says the stock could help push the index below 17,000.
"But there should be good support at 16,800 because there is not
too much selling pressure on banks and property stocks," Wong
said.
