Firms unite on streaming media

Tvia and Wind River Systems will work to help develop streaming media libraries, Internet appliances and set-top boxes. Wind River’s ventures unit also made an undisclosed investment in the semiconductor maker. Tvia, a customized TV technology company, will pair its chips with Wind River’s software development products for digital TV and set-top box customers.

Forrester Research predicts that households with set-top box Web access will grow from 15.3% in 2000 to 33.9% in 2003.

Dataquest estimates the 2003 market for digital set-top boxes at $7.2 billion and the market for digital TVs at $5 billion.
