Beijing to allow gold to be freely traded in two years

------------------------------------------------------------------------
SHANGHAI — China plans to allow gold to be freely traded in the domestic market in two years, according to a report in the Shanghai-based Wen Hui Daily, quoting Wang Dexue, the di rector of the Gold Bureau under the State Economic and Trade Commission.

But China won't completely open the market to international trade until the yuan, Chinese currency, is fully convertible, the paper reported.

China previously planned to deregulate the domestic gold market in 3-5 years in three stages, but the country's possible entry into the World Trading Organisation later this year has led the government to speed up deregulation efforts, the report quoted Wang as saying.

The government is planning to merge the first two stages to allow gold trading in the domestic market in two years, the paper said.

But, the final stage, which will see the government open gold operations to international trade, will not be conducted until the yuan is fully convertible in the international market, the paper cited Wang as saying. — BridgeNews.
