DALLAS (AP) - Texas Instruments Inc. plans to significantly expand its wireless research and development resources over the next two years for its next-generation computing applications, including the 2.5G and 3G systems.

The company said Monday said it will hire 200 engineers at its Villeneuve-Loubet site in France.

``Expanding our design talent in France will enhance our capability to meet our customer demands across the world,'' said Gilles Delfassy, vice president, Worldwide Wireless Communications.

``The volume rollout of high-speed wireless data services in 2001 will start an explosion of new applications and appliances, all connected to each other through the Internet,'' Delfassy said. ``For the first time in many years, wireless phones will have significant new features besides size and battery-life to motivate consumers to upgrade to new handsets.''

The expansion will help speed the development of advanced digital signal processing and analog products for next-generation wireless Internet appliances with integrated voice, data and video, the company said.

Shares of Texas Instruments were down 37.5 cents to close at $57.63 in Monday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
