Shipments of Bluetooth Devices to Top 1.4 Billion by 2005: ABI
September 11, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Allied Business Intelligence Inc. of the United States forecasts that in 2001, shipments of equipment using Bluetooth will reach 56 million units, and will top 1.4 billion by 2005.

ABI surveyed 17 different market segments, including mobile phones, notebook PCs, desktop PCs and PDAs.

According to a recent ABI report, the LSI market for Bluetooth will reach revenues of US$5.3 billion by 2005 thanks to the momentum.

Also, it said that mobile handsets will account for 65 percent of all Bluetooth-equipped terminals shipped in 2002, and in 2005 it will be less than 47 percent, meaning that by 2005, Bluetooth technology will more deeply penetrate PCs and consumer electronics. This will indicate the emergence of an extremely competitive LSI market, bringing a unit price of a Bluetooth module at less than US$5 after 2003.

Although it shows great growth, ABI urged caution that there are some problems to be overcome concerning Bluetooth's propagation.

Navin Sabharwal, ABI director of residential and networking technologies, said that the Bluetooth-mounted equipment will not be commercialized much until mid-2001 because of a lack of inexpensive silicon, interoperability problems and limited applications. When these issues are resolved, Bluetooth technology will be more widespread significantly from 2002 onwards.
