Strawberry arrested after traffic accident
espn.go.com

TAMPA, Fla. -- Darryl Strawberry, the suspended
outfielder for the New York Yankees, was arrested
Monday and jailed on charges of reckless driving and
leaving the scene of an accident.

Strawberry's sports utility vehicle hit a street
sign and a car while weaving through traffic
outside downtown Tampa, the Hillsborough
County Sheriff's Office said.

An off-duty deputy, watching through his rear-view
mirror, saw Strawberry "weaving all over the road," the
release said.

The deputy watched as Strawberry's SUV veer off the
roadway and hit a street sign, then come back onto the
road, police said. The officer then followed him, saw him
strike the Isuzu, and drive on, the release said.

The deputy, driving his own, unmarked vehicle, was able
to flag Strawberry to a stop a few blocks away and held
him until on-duty officers arrived.

No one was injured in the collisions.

Strawberry was held at the scene in the back of a deputy's
cruiser, then was taken to jail, deputies said.

He was charged with leaving the scene of accident with
property damage and with reckless driving.

Strawberry, an eight-time All-Star, started his career with
the New York Mets and later played in Los Angeles and
San Francisco.

He rejoined the Yankees last season but was suspended
for most of last season after his arrest in Tampa, Fla., in
April 1999 on drug and solicitation charges.

Strawberry pleaded no contest to those charges and was
sentenced to probation. He was suspended from baseball
for a year in February after he tested positive for cocaine
in January.
