Injured Hiker Survives Nine Days on Glacier

BOLZANO, Italy (Reuters) - A 45-year-old German hiker
survived nine days alone on an Alpine glacier after breaking his
leg in a fall, Italian media reported on Saturday.

Kurt Visel, reported to be an experienced hiker, began his
walk at the base of the Giovaretto glacier in Italy's Val
Martello on August 30 and was only discovered when other hikers
heard his call for help on Friday.

Visel, from the Tuebingen area in southern Germany, fell and
fractured a leg on the first day of his adventure and lived on
sweets, muesli and melted snow with just a sleeping bag to keep
him warm, media reported.

He will be taken home by relatives after receiving treatment
in an Italian hospital.
