Boston, Sept. 9 (Bloomberg) -- SpeechWorks International Inc., whose software lets people browse the Internet with a telephone, may be overvalued, Barron's reported in its ''Up & Down Wall Stret column.
The Boston-based company's $2 billion market value is extravagant even if SpeechWorks doubles its revenue this year. Current estimates are that sales will rise less than twofold. What's more, the company lost money last year and will continue to do so through 2002, the paper said.

SpeechWorks shares have risen as high as 108.50 since it went public Aug. 1 at 20, in part because of the company's alliances with AT&T Corp. and America Online Inc, Barron's said. Customers for its speech recognition software include Apple Computer Inc., Nortel Networks Corp. and UAL Corp.'s United Airlines.

At the same time, it competes with larger rivals such as International Business Machines Corp., Lucent Technologies Inc. and Microsoft Corp. That competition, combined with annual sales of just $14 million last year and big losses mean the stock could fall as low as 30, Barron's reported.
